Default Head Up Display, are you happy with it?

I am a hopeful owner for a 2014 A8L and am hoping that they will offer the Head Up Display (HUD) as an option for it.

Are you guys happy with your HUD?

What data can be displayed in the HUD?

The A8 offers "night vision", does the A7 offer that and if so, can it be configured to show info in the HUD from the night vision?

thanks for any info.

The A6/7 can be configured with both night vision and the HUD. The only information the HUD will show regarding NV is the pedestrian warning symbol. No actual footage derived from the night vision camera, unfortunately.

The main data that shows in the HUD is speed, navigational directions and ACC (Active Cruise Control) and Lane Assistant settings. I thought it would be somewhat gimmicky, but have grown to appreciate it. I hardly ever have to look at the dash during day-to-day driving anymore - most of the information I need is on the HUD. I do wish it was more configurable (turn signal indicators would be nice), but it's a good feature nonetheless.

Love my HUD. Never have to looked down. I did not plan on purchasing this option but the car on the lot that I purchased had it. I did not think I would like or use it but I have grown to love it. Great optio

It's one of those options you won't miss unless you have it. You grow to depend on it. Extremely useful.

Thank you for the helpful replies. I hope that they add this to the 2014 A8 options. I am surprised that it isn't already available.

The HUD is awesome. I find myself wondering where my speed is when I drive the wife's car - looking down just feels wrong now.

The night vision? A complete waste of money. If they had projected it on the HUD it might have been an interesting toy but projecting on the instrument cluster and forcing you to look down at the image while driving at night just doesn't work in practice. Maybe the pedestrian detection works better in a city or a country road or something but I've never had it alert driving through the suburbs.

I was happy with mine until it decided to go faulty, I am not getting any form of display on my windscreen. Looks like it will have to be replaced under warranty, not a bad thing considering the constant rattles I tend to get from the unit since I bought the car in July 2011.

I like the convenience of having the HUD, however the aesthetics of the unit really let the interior down. Audi should just have bitten the bullet and made it a standard feature and that way they could have designed it correctly into the top of the dashboard.

Who knows one day they may replace the HUD unit with a clear film based OLED display that simply sticks to the inside of the windscreen, now that would be innovative.

I haven't driven an Audi with HUD. I have driven BMW's with HUD and find it kinda cool.

What do you think is wrong with the aesthetics of the Audi HUD?

One very minor consideration with the HUD is you do have to adjust the brightness if turned down when wearing sunglasses...otherwise a great option.

I agree with your comments on the nightvision completely. Having to look down into the dash to see what is in front of you is distracting at best, and dangerous if you are not careful. It would have been great to show the images in the pop up screen to the right. Neat idea, but the excution of night vision utility is very limited.

I consider the HUD the best option in my car.
It is very practical as I can pay attention to the road all the time without having to look down the speedometer to see how fast I'm going at.

However, I agree that the night vision is 99% useless.

While the almost-non-existent integration between the night vision system and HUD is an issue, personally, I think there is a bigger problem:

In the rare cases when the red pedestrian warning comes on, the car is already very close to the pedestrian.
I found this does not give enough reaction time to the driver to avoid hitting the pedestrian, if the driver was actually not paying attention to the pedestrian already.
So if I'm driving at night and have no idea that I'm about to hit someone, it will be most likely too late to avoid an accident even if the red pedestrian warning alerts me.
I wish it would alert the driver a couple of seconds earlier to give me enough time to react to the alert/chime.
