Default Pre-sense shocks

I was driving on a city street minding my own business and I see a little empty chips bag tumbling across the street. Suddenly the car decided it's time to slam on the brakes by itself and apply the seat belt tensioner.

It took me a while to recover and understand what was going on. I stopped and picked up the chips bag from the sidewalk. It had an aluminum lining and I guess my car thought that it was another car or stationary object. I am very lucky that nobody was driving behind me...

I will tell Audi about this at my next service

I doubt the chips bag had aluminum -- the shiny metal stuff is mylar, which is a polyester film and I don't think it contains any metal. Pretty shocking if your story is true and makes me think twice about getting the driver assistance package.

That may be true, but I am pretty sure it triggered the emergency stop. I was looking into this after the incident and it seems like chips bags are commonly metallized with evaporated aluminum. Anyway, the car shouldn't do this.

I think the first time that presense kicks in it can be shocking for me it was the same thing except it was a car making a right hand turn into a shopping center and I had it the timing right so I shouldnt have had to brake and the car went berzerk ... it was very lucky no one was behind me also but once you know whats happening its actually ok. you can override it by tapping the brake. Ive tried to make it come on again on purpose and I havent had the guts to play chicken with the car ..so I cant reproduce it but if you werent paying attention and this thing kicked in..it would save your life.. its great for texting and driving..jk .

Bootnet - Had the same thing happen to me today as well with the same set of circumstances. I feel the car overreacted so I promptly went in and shut that feature off. I've always wondered if that feature and the active cruise control activate the brake lights when they slow the car dramatically like that??

I can tell you that the ACC does activate the brake lights when it applies the brakes because I've seen the reflection of the brake lights on behind me.

I would also bet money that it activates the brake lights when the Audi Brake Guard kicks in as I can't imagine it would be legal to slam on the brakes without activating the brake lights.
