Is this the start of the Black Screen issue?

My Dealer said they checked for bad wires but it seems to coincidental that all I need to do is bang on the dash to fix it. Sometimes it does go completely black but usually a bang on the dash gets it back. Please let me know what you think.

If a bang on the dash fixes it, you are definitely having a bad (lose) connection somewhere. It can be in the wiring somewhere or inside the unit itself. Only way to find it (in my experience) is to open things up and start jiggling wires, flexing connectors, tapping on things and see where you get a reaction. Intermittent issues are always a PITA!

Of course, when I finally get to taking it apart to see if I can identify the issue,

can't get it to

any longer! Put it all back together, drove for 10 mins and it started all over again. In fact. it did the same thing when I took it to the dealer. The dealer is suggesting replacing the MMI Head Unit but I have a hard time believing that will fix it because I can bang on the top of the dash to affect the issue. If it was the MMI Head Unit, would banging on the top of sash fix it?

What I would be looking for is a break in one of the wires. When you pull the unit out, the wires are stretched and the bad part makes contact, so the problem does not show up. When you put it back, the wires curve and the bad part opens up.

In my case, it worked fine until the MMI was fully extended and it would shut off. Specifically, look at the wires underneath the taped up portion behind the MMI. Once I removed the gooey tape, I spotted the wire break. I soldered in a small section of new wiring so it’s no longer stretched when the MMI comes out, and everything was as good as new.
