Subwoofer Options
It has been established that the subwoofer on the A7 resides in this box. The sub is the same on the Base, Bose and Big Buck B&O systems. The sub is weak and does not produce decent bass.
1. Does anyone have a picture of the inside of this box. Does it simply contain a subwoofer, or is anything else in this box? What is the size and weight of the driver?
2. Has anyone simply replaced the subwoofer in this box, and possibly added a dedicated sub amp with good results? What driver did you use?
3. Has anyone completely replaced this box with anything else including a custom built enclosure? What was the cost?
4. We have already established that some folks have successfully added standalone sub enclosures residing on top of the boot floor by the rear seat backs (consuming space), and custom built enclosures in the passenger side hatch cubby (expensive) with good results. No need to elaborate on these options.
Thanks for your help!!

You'll notice in the 4th post he states the installer put the whole thing in the original location
"It's a 100% non-invasive install and in no way changes the factory look. "All" (this is not a DIY install) he did was replace the sub-woofer and amp already installed with the Focal gear. In fact in the spare tire compartment there's more room now. He did a great job. "

I would love to be able to replace the subwoofer in the black box next to the spare with an upgraded driver and add a dedicated sub amp. I have been unable to find anyone who has done this - and if the sound improvement would be substantially better.
I am assuming that if you remove the black box next to the spare and replace it with a custom built enclosure (like gangee), the cost would be equal or greater than a custom built enclosure in the passenger side boot cubby. Not sure which option would sound better - but the estimated cost around $1,800 is higher than what I wanted to spend.
Would love to see picture of gangee's installation. I PM'd him, however, his post was from 2011 so I'm not sure if he is even active on AudiWorld. I also called the audi shop that did the work in Colorado and the voice mail greeting said they are no longer doing installations.

Today, gangee was kind enough to post some pictures. As you can see the installer did not "put the whole thing in the original location." The sub amp is in the original location of the subwoofer enclosure next to the spare, however, the new subwoofer driver in in a custom enclosure in the driver's side boot cubby.
Looks like a nice install and I bet it sounds great.
