18020 code

Default 18020 code

Was driving 30 mph in the neighborhood when the engin just stopped running. The code that came up was 18020. I know it is not the fuel pump since I can hear it energize when cranking the engine. I don't think it's an empty tank since the gauge ready 3/4 and I remember filling it up a day ago. The car cranks over strong but zero sign of firing up. I also looked at the timing belt by removing the driverside cover and it all look fine. Does anyone have any thoughts? Could it be the fuel pump relay? Has anyone ever have to replace the ecu? Do they just give out? Thanks

Yea that's what vag shows, but does that mean - I need to replace the ecu? Have you ever heard of one going bad on an A8?

Default Check the ECU box Passenger's side under the hood.

If the drains are clogged it could flood the EXU box.

Default Other people here have had that code without the engine stopping

Of course you should verify the ECM coding against what's specified and try to recode it, but if that doesn't get it running, check out the engine speed (crankshaft position) sensor as well, which has stopped a few cars w/o codes.

Default 18020 code update

I performed output test NONE of the fuel injectors were activated, ALL other components for output test did.
I checked pin 1 to ground on injector harness according to bentley and 12v check so there is power to injectors when ignition is put to run.
I also check pin 2 and 4 from ecu power relay harness and got 12v too with ignition on run.
I THINK this means that the ecu is not providing some type of signal. Any thoughts?

Default Disconncect ECU, inspect and clean contacts, spray electric contact cleaner and reseat

As we discussed off-line, the injectors are provided with a constant hot and the ecu grounds them at the appropriate time to complete the circuit and open them. Three things come to mind. The ECU, the ECU's Grounds or the sensor(s) providing timing signal to the ECU.

It is time to open the black box, check for wetness , dry things out, open and clean all the connectors.

Anyone got a spare ECU lying around to loan him? Mine won't work, it's a 2000.
