A8 Mirror problem
Can anybody help?
Mirror on drivers side folds in on command, but opens way to far when folding out Have checked the limit switch inside is working. Audi garage say to replace the complete unit, but this may not be the faulty part. I believe the fault lies where the limit switch signal is not telling the motor to stop. Any ideas... any of you had the same problem?

Is there a broken mechanical stop?
On 1997-9 US models at least, the left mirror's limit switch is wired in parallel with the right mirror's limit switch. The control module can't tell whether one or both mirror's limit switches have closed (i.e. completed the circuit). The control module powers both mirrors' folding motors together -- one motor can not be switched off before the other.
Depending on whether each switch closes or opens when its mirror fully unfolds, both motors probably get power until either the fastest or slowest mirror has unfolded. The latter arrangement, if that's how they do it (and it would be the decent way), requires a mechanical stop to keep the faster mirror from unfolding too far.

My car does not have folding mirrors both sides. The switch only shows a detail of one folding mirror, where as the manual and you mention that both mirrors fold. Is the control module an expensive unit to replace, as I feel this is where the fault lies.

I don't know what a control module costs, but it wouldn't hurt to find someone with a wiring diagram that matches your car and then test that your limit switch signal reaches the control module.
If on the other hand, your car really has two folding mirrors, and is wired the way 1997-9 US models are said to be, then the control module can't be responsible for one mirror not working, because the motors are wired together and the limit switches are wired together. There are no separate left and right connections to the control module.
