ABS light on, Brake light blinking

ABS light on, Brake light blinking
This problem began last summer/fall on my 1998 A8. It was extremely intermittent. The ABS light would come on, the dash would make a beeping sound, and the brake light would flash. It remained intermittent until this week, when the ABS light stayed permanently lit, and the brake light always flashes beginning at startup. Before it was random, and would just happen while driving and then go away.
A friend with a 1998 A4 said his car did the same thing, and it was the ABS control module which costs $800 + according to him. I searched the archives, and found instances of the ABS light on, but they did nto mention the brake light flashing at the same time. Is it the ABS module for sure (I do not have VAG-Comm) or could it just be the sensor wires? I have not seen any reposrt of the flashing brake light before in conjuction with the ABS light.
