Braking problems
I drive a 97 2.8 auto with 140k on her.
I had the rear drivers side (RHD) caliper replaced a week ago by an audi specialist (that i trust) . He also replaced both CV gators (boots).
Apart from the ineffective braking on the rear drivers side which i didnt notice (a braking test for its new MOT exposed the fault) the car drove perfectly. Straight , true and with no wobble or vibration. Since the work has been done however there a several problems.
1) Braking pulse/shudder felt at most speeds but most annoying below 30mph.
2) A hum in the car while driving. Similar to a bearing on its way out . i have replaced the bearing in the front passenger side twice in 60k due to all our islands (or rotaries!) so I know what one sounds like.
3) A slight vibration in the steering at most speeds. there is a looseness to the wheel when driving straight. Its almost imperceptible but it Just doesn't feel as it should.
Could the old caliper have stuck on and seized and then warped the disc?
Could the bearing noise come from replacing the cv gators? ( i dont think they need to be removed do they? ) I also believe they are not tapered so over-tightening shouldn't be a problem.
Im taking it back to the garage tomorrow to have it checked out.
Any ideas in the meantime?
cheers
Jamie
i can assure you that i drive an A8 D2. This model wasn't widely available on the american market but is an A8 thru and thru and there are thousands of examples across europe.
Maybe this opens another debate?!
there is some tech info here plus another pic of my car. If you stil feel im in the wrong place then i will go have a look at tyre smoke although given that this D2 forum has been so helpful to me over the years i find it hard to believe that we arnt on the same page as it were.
Replies welcome.
