Default Engine connector / cable Question

Please advice. On top of my engine are these cables / connectors (highlighted in the picture in Red).

The one on the left, the actual green plastic material at the connector point is cracked and damaged. The rest of the cable is in fine condition. I have no warning lights or, issues with the engine or, electrical components in the car (2001 Audi S8).

Can someone please advice what this is for, should I replace them? if so, what should I look for, in terms of part number, wiring description?

Thanks in advance!

Knock sensors mounted to the engine under the intake manifold. They help adjust ignition timing to maximum advance possible depending on the octane rating of the gas your burning.

Cracked plastic probably does not mean a bad electrical connection...electrical contacts are usually individually connected inside these plugs.

Thank you kindly for the explanation.

Just for my sanity, are you saying that even though the green connector to, what I am assuming to be, the ECM, looks cracked and dirty and as long as they are still 'connected' I should be fine?

Just want piece of mind.

As I did some research on-line, looks like BOSCH OEM sensors are about $60 each and I would need two, one in each side of the engine and also would need to find the female side of the connector. Does that sound right?

Thanks for any guidance.

ANYTHING is a DIY project if you are qualified, which also includes possessing the proper tools....code reader (or VagCom)and a repair (Bentley) manual.

If don't have the above, NO, it is NOT DIY.

You would likely need to remove the intake manifold to get to the sensors mounting points, in order to change a component that has not failed. The green plastic fitting is merely a housing for individual electrical connectors...IF there was a problem, you would be getting a CEL and there would be a code to read. IF the problem was a bad connection at this point, a manual would recommend repairing the connection at that point...NOT replacing a working sensor buried under major components.

If it really bothers you to see a cracked box that affects nothing, keep the engine cover in place
