Default Engine Replacement

So as a winter project, I want to replace the engine in my 97. I have the ABZ engine now with 157000, and it's leaking oil so I want to pull it out and rebuild it. I was wondering what kind of an engine I could put in, does it have to be a 97 or can it be a different year, like a 2000-2003? Or would that not work with the tranny? Any clues? Thanks

Default Why do you need to rebuild it?

At 157k it should not need a rebuild, why not just fix the oil leaks?

Why would you replace it? Why not just refurb the one you have?

Default I might have a head gasket that's busted

When I start the car, I have white steam/smoke come out, but it goes away when the car is warm. When the water that drips out of the exhaust dries up on the ground, it's white and chalky. I have also seen a little bit of coolant loss. So replacing it with a used/refurbed would be cheaper I'd think.

I put dino oil in with seal additive. As of right now I have only driven about 75 miles after the oil change, so that might be why I'm still leaking. But the amount that comes out, It looks like it is streaming out from that area, but I'll wait to see if it decreases. /Fingers crossed/

Why don't you just put in a new gasket then?

Default Just had the timing job done 50 miles ago

That's about $3500 I got qouted at for the head gaskets job, both sides. I could get an engine for $2600 and put it in. Does this seem wise or no? If I can save money any other way, trust me, I'll do it. I'd rather spend it in some other way.
