It happend again!
Took the car out for a short drive, turned it off and couldn't get it restarted. I thought maybe there was a vacuum problem so I opened the gas cap and let it sit for a while, the car fired right up but wouldn't stay running....Any clues? (It's not the first time this has happened...)

main battery ground
last winter, my wife took the A8 to her hairdressers. When she was done, she couldn't start the car. All the electronics worked, but the car wouldn't even turn over. It turned out to be the main battery and starter ground. It was all corroded from the salt on the road in the winter. Had it flat-bedded to my local mechanic, and he cleaned it up and fixed it. One other time, my car wouldn't start, but it would turn over. That problem turned out to be a bad ECU. Good luck.

It cranked perfectly, it just wouldn't fire up. This happened once before, but after letting the car sit for two or three days it was fine.
My assured warranty ran out two months ago.... I knoew this would happen!

The diagnosis was that the electronics in the instrument cluster went and they are linked to the engine control computer. Of course I am waiting now (it will me two weeks come Monday)for the parts to come from Germany; hopefully the tech at the dealer made the right guess - S8 down to A4 1.8t is a pretty big difference to get used to.
Does your instrument cluster come on when you turn the ignition on? Mine didn't no odometer or other indicators lit.
