Hello all. Is there a D2 A8 FAQ/buyers' guide? Thinking about picking up a D2 A8.
I'm thinking about picking up a D2 platform A8 in addition to my '01 A4 1.8T.
I've seen the www.audipages.com guide, but it seems somewhat...incomplete. Are there common failure points on these cars? If so, what are they/around when do things tend to go? I've seen transmission-related electronics brought up as a problem. The A8s I'm looking at are both 1997 pre-tiptronic models.
Also, anyone who's owned both a B5 A4 and a D2 A8 care to compare the two? It seems like a really underappreciated car. Thanks in advance.

It's not an underappreciated car here :-) ......
Other than the buyers guide (which does hit most of the major issues), if you scan thru the last 3 months or so of posts, you'll get an idea what else can go wrong. As with all things, peoples' luck runs the gamut from good to bad. Mine's been pretty good.

I've driven a B5 S4....and the interior quality comparison....there isn't
although the D2 is a bit aged...it was a 70K car. Mine had barely any squeaks and rattles, that the B5s have...and mine had 201K.
The audipages is pretty complete for a buyers guide...above and beyond other forums. What you're asking for from members is their experience in problem areas.
Transmission...thats about it for a big one besides the usual control arm issues.

After many years in my 98 A4, I just picked up a 00 A8
And I have never been happier.
shop carefully and you won't be dissapointed.

regarding transmissions
I've just been sitting around here for a month or so, but if I've understood the gist it seems pre 2000 A8's have alot of transmission issues. Theres a poll somewhere that shows the hunting clunking issues are mostly pre 2000.
