Default HELP!

I'm about to drop 20 large on a 2000 A8 with 80K miles. TB , WP, and OC seals done right.

Here is the problem.

I notice a slight surging , hunting on light throttle at about 1800 RPM , more so on uphill throttle on situations. I've read all the posts on tranny problems. I scared myself away from this forum for 6 months and went looking for a Lexus after getting a response from tozo on a 1997 A8 and asked the fatefull question , "How's your tranny ?" . He responded most appropriately with "you asked the wrong guy " and supplied a picture of his tranny on the floor.

IF the hunting is very slight , will it get worse. It just had a fluid change ( the right way ) , filter ( no flush ) and was recoded to sport with the VAG tool. I notice a 200 RPM change in the tach when its happening and have had a few bumps that I feel were the tranny.

I'm going to drive the car tomorrow. Here's my question ...

What should I do when I drive the car to induce any latent hunting problems ? I have the Audipages checklist in hand .

Thanks in advance .

Default uuhh

if your spending 20k, you could probably find A8 in better condition. If not, make sure you get a warranty of some kind, that will definitly cover your tranny.
any problem on any car always gets worse. the surging, "comes from a bad O2 sensor".(AWF- search: surging, D2 platform)
The hunting seems to be a problem around the forum. Not sure of the cause/fix, but your in the right place to find an answer.

good luck.
and dont let me discourage you, the car is worth the very seldom problem. ;-)
I love my Audi

Default Good Luck

Two months ago I bought a 98 A8 with 101,000 miles for $10,500. Spent $3100 on maintenance and TB/WP/Thermostat etc. Love the car. Learned just about all I need to know on this forum.

I haven't had any tranny issues yet (knock on wood) but based on the poll taken here the bulk of the tranny issues were 97s and 98s (maybe because of higher mileage and age). Do a search on the D2 forum for Tranny Poll. If you think the tranny is bad maybe you should keep looking. Good luck.

Default 2nd; I paid the same amount for same year & mileage ('00, 80k). . .

But that was almost two years ago, and the car was flawless. Having the TB & tranny service done is a big plus, but I'd pass on this one.

Default If you notice hunting now -plus 20K and you'll hate it.

My 1999 started hunting around 70k. I had the Audi dealership due a tranny flush at 74K. No change and has steadily gotten worse. Now at 105K it is so bad you will hate driving it.

Default Car details

Brilliant Black
Black Valcona leather
Xenons
50% rubber
stock 17's
Winter no solar

This is my dream color combo. After sitting in this car I want nothing else.

I"m thinking worst case , I replace the tranny in 20K miles after my company pays me 20000 x 40 cents per mile to drive it . $8,000 pays for insurance , gas , and a tranny job.

I checked out that atlanta tranny job. Is about $3500 a good number to get it replaced by a reputable shop or am I dreaming ?

PS : the picture of you car is killing me Is that Brilliant Black ?

Default Don't know anything about him other than what's been posted here.

But he's local to me, so I may pay him a visit some day. Do a search for other options.
Yes, it's black with the two-tone caramel interior - my favorite combo on a D2.

Default Re: HELP!

Drive it 40 mph in 4th gear and play lightly with the troddle, you will feel it. The rpm goes up and a second later falls back with a little kick on the drive train. The other problem is the highway drop in/out after you take your feet off the gas. That is TCU problem.

Default Re: HELP!

I see the movement of the tach when I do the light throttle thing. I don't feel any significant bump or kick .

I'm thinking you can't get a "little" pregnant. Can an A8 have a slight issue with tranny hunting. I just read 100 + posts on this subject and I'm beginning to think that the situation might no be terminal.

I had the mechanic at the shop selling this car recode the tranny to sport . I noticed an improvement right away. Then going uphill at 30 MPH I saw a 200 - 300 RPM fluctuation.

0 - 5000 RPM in first was fun : No bumps, hunts, or surges. Just smooth power.

Am I drinking too much A coolaid and missing the forest through the trees ?
