Default Indicator Problem

I have a UK 97 A8, the turn indicators are working intermittently, sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. They also will stop sometimes when the column switch (arm) is still engaged (ie two or three falshes then stop). The hazard lights work fine and I have replaced the flasher relay behind the glovebox

Any ideas

I suspect that it is either a faulty hazard switch or column switch (arm) but without a wiring diagram I don't know if the turn indicator wiring passes through the hazard switch. If it is the hazard switch can anyone help is dismantling the centre console to get at the switch???

Default Careful

If your going to dismantle the centre console be damn careful of the air bag.

Have you tried 'banging' the centre console when it fails but the switch is still on. It might add weight to your theory.

Thanks for the reply

My car is UK spec and has only two airbags in the front, one on the wheel and one above the glovebox. Are you refering to either of these or is there an airbag impact trigger located centrally in the dash. (or does a US spec car have more airbags??)

Went to a UK Audi garage today who said that 99% of indicator problems were with the hazard switch.

Default check ignition switch

My american spec 97 A8 had similar problem. Turns out the spring return on the ignition switch (where the key goes) doesn't always return to the proper position. I usally have to turn the ignition key about 1/4" counter clockwise (after starting the car) until it finds the right spot. I always knoe if I have it write, because the lights and wipers will work.

I haven;t a clue about where the danger really is, sorry, just know that where there are airbags there is danger, espetially if you are working around areas that could trigger them when your up close.

I like the answer GMikes97A8Q gave; it a go.

Default OK got at the switch - useful tip

The Audi dealer suggested carefully prising off the wooden trim on the centre console, well blood out of a stone would be easier!! Having spent 10 mins looking at this and some gently tugging, I decided to remove the air vent assembly above the switches, using a kitchen palette knife (1" spread) I prised from alternate sides and it came out quite easily. This then allows easy access to all the switches on the top row - useful tip. Playing around with the hazard switch confirmed that it is definitely iffy, so I've ordered a new one, keep you all updated.

[re-ignitiom switch, unlikely, mine was replaced recently and everything else works ok- thanks anyway]
