LPG conversion completed..
The installer that did the job where unable to connect to the ECU. I got the kit from the UK as they are less than half the price compared to Australian sourced kits. A few emails and i had my own lap top all connected. So tuned it myself so far. Still running a little lean despite adding opening time to the gas injector opening times, so may have to drill out the nozzle holes. Injectors, as all LPG gas ones are, are noisier. Still smooth as the Audi V8 should be a few seconds after change over. No MPG figures yet, thats a week or so away.
Tank is 65 litres. The LPG ECU is located in the bottom of the air box. The tuning part is actually the fun part! No change to spark plugs, still using the standard Bosch plugs. Added an electronic "Flaslube" brand valve saver kit for the fact LPG is a drier fuel. I have to do the timing chain, water pump, thermostat and oil cooler job later this year, so most of the gear doesn't have to be moved.
Any questions or suggestions, shoot!
Next time i have to take the covers off ill add the pic!
In Imperial units that's 12.5 miles per gallon of LPG. LPG is typically quoted as 1.35 gallons LPG/gallon of Gas equivalent, so 12.5 MPG relates to about 16.9 MPG (gasoline).
My dash typically says I'm getting 19 MPG avg, but the odometer and fuel pump tell me its closer to 17. Here in Houston the price of LPG is about $3/gal...so assuming I get the same mileage you do, my fuel cost with LPG would actually go UP slightly compared to my fuel cost on regular old gasoline.
I guess I'll keep my motor nice and stock for now, but as Gas goes up and LPG stays stable, it might be good for my next A8.
