Miles to empty?

Miles to empty?
I ran my 98 A8 to 0 miles left per the dash readout and I could only squeeze 21.5 gallons into the tank. Is there a 2 gallon or so reserve after it shows no miles left or is my computer calibration off a bit?

If I park my car at home with 1/4 or less in the tank, the next morning the computer will always show 0 miles to empty. I climb a rather steep hill to where I park, the A8/S8 has a saddle-shaped fuel tank, and appararently the multiple level transmitters are easily confused.
Once I ran the tank to near empty (on the race track), the motor sputtered in a hard corner with the computer showing ~5 miles to go. Since I added 22 gal, the calibration seems good.

Aren't those two statements equivalent, anyway?
Mine seems pretty accurate, though I've never run it completely dry.

AFTER car shows 0 miles, the car will run for at least another 20 to 30 miles. (I tipically do not go till 30 but few times had to squize another 20 out of it. TO my surprise tank would hold about 22.4 gallons or so.

Running the tank absolutely empty is probably not a good idea...
the extra fuel in the tank can act to assist in cooling the fuel pump. If there is less gas around the fuel pump it will just stay warm and could possibly wear out.

You can go about another 5 miles when on Zero, at most.. I ran out and I do not trust the reading.
There is no way you can drive another 20 to 30 miles when the reading is at Zero.. I know for sure because I ran out.. I was lucky enough to roll down a hill into a gas station.. As soon as the Zero came on, I drove 7.6 miles which was just enough to get off the highway and into the station.. What I would like to know is why one minute, the thing says 20 miles or so and then, sometimes within the next few miles, it goes right down to Zero! This is with normal driving.. I do not trust the stupid system.. If the reading goes down to 10, do not chance it.. Get gas.

The other day I got into my car to go home and noticed the dash readout was at 0. Since I work downtown, where there are no gas stations, I got on the freeway and headed home, hoping get as far as I could. I pushed it another 15 miles before I stopped and filled up. I think it took around 22 gals.
