Default p0741

i purchased a 99 audi a8 4.2 the other day and was looking it over in the shop i pulled a p0741, vehicle drove fine to the shop about 10 miles, i droped the trans pan and noticed the fluid was very burnt, is this a common issue with these vehicles for a bad TC or solenoid getting stuck cuz of crappy fluid? Vehicle has 156xxx

Did you check the correct level before dropping the pan. Low atf level, more than the condition of it, could cause the code all by itself.

Pre-2000 A8's are famous for TC-clutch "problems" (thumping, etc...), whether due to solenoid valve, TCM signal or mechanical problem(?). So at 154K miles on a 99, it's no surprise.

If you're lucky, a new atf filter and a bottle of LubeGuard Red might help.

i did open up the fill plug before droping the pan and a good amount of fluid came out so i dont think it was low but than again i did not have the vehicle running, i ordered a filter kit and fluid so hopefully that will fix the issue not sure about the fluid but i am getting pentosin atf for it checked the manual didnt mention much about the type of fluid it takes?

come to think of it when i drove the care home it did have a vibration thought it was just imbalanced tires but now that this code is present makes sense that it could be tc shudder

The atf can only be checked with the engine running and a specific "warm" atf temp, when most of it is in circulation. So with engine is off, most of the atf (no matter how low) is in the pan...WELL over the measuring point.

Sorry, but a good amount draining is no indication as to whether it was low or not.

Yes, "thumping" (TC clutch going on and off when it shouldn't) does feel kind of like a badly balanced wheel. You'd feel it at relatively low rpms when the car is cruising under light throttle load.

so i changed the fluid and the filter today, the tc shudder is gone for the most part but the car bangs gears randomly and after fifth gear is engaged the rpm fluctuates by 1k with foot steasy on gas, ive tested the solenoids and i beleive the issue is with the tcc clutch itself so got bad news for anyone whos got this issue ):

so my fix was a torque converter ): But picked it up pretty cheap from revmax, if anyone else has issue you can pick up tc from revmax for about 400 w/shipping.

Thanks for the follow-up.
Too many posters never report back with final solutions, thus helping no one but themselves.
