Pre-2000 A8's are famous for TC-clutch "problems" (thumping, etc...), whether due to solenoid valve, TCM signal or mechanical problem(?). So at 154K miles on a 99, it's no surprise.
If you're lucky, a new atf filter and a bottle of LubeGuard Red might help.

Yes, "thumping" (TC clutch going on and off when it shouldn't) does feel kind of like a badly balanced wheel. You'd feel it at relatively low rpms when the car is cruising under light throttle load.
