Paging Tozo...
I am in KC and therefore can not utilize your rebuilding business but I wanted to ask a question of you since you are so framiliar with the ZF transmission. I have a 2000 A8 with 130K. I have lost use (slipping, grabbing) of my forward gears (not just 1st because I tried Tiptronic) but I have reverse which works fine.
The question is: all other 2000s that I know of lost their REVERSE, can you think of a scenario whereby I could have this condition from something other than a failure of the trans which neccessitates a rebuild? (the vag com says something about shaft rpm output not matching the input ,or something to that effect)

What he VVV said, or just a blown o-ring.
If it goes into limp mode every time you drive it then go and find an open, straight road. Get it up to 55mph. Put it in N and shut off the engine for a second. Start it back up, (it will reset the limp mode) and put it in D. It will go into 5th (different clutch, B). If it drives fine in 5th then you need a rebuild for sure.

It slips too much to get to highway speed. When I took it for a spin after having it towed to the shop in order to try the Tip Ihad a difficult time gettig one block and then back to the shop. Except I could drive in reverse as fast as I wanted.
