remote keys

Hopefully my experience programming keys helps someone. I bought a 98 A8 a couple weeks ago that came with one switch blade key. I called the Audi dealer and they told me roughly $170 for a remote and key and additional $100 to cut and program. I got a used remote with a blank blade off ebay for $65. I matched all of the numbers on the inside of the key except the date. I went to Audi in Nashua, NH and they wouldn't even cut it. It was their policy not to cut customer supplied keys. First thing he asked was "where did you get that ebay?". They told me that their machine messed up one of ten keys and they didn't want to be liable for possibly wrecking mine. I was in northern vermont and had no luck contacting and locksmith. I figured I'd have a better chance in the city and called a couple locksmith's in Providence, RI and one told me they could do it no problem. They cut it for me for $20 and it works fine. I was able to program it myself with directions from the internet. It's a great feeling to have the extra key, but even better to have beaten 'the man'. thanks audi.

Don't think you can do that with the post-facelift cars with the immobilizer.

The Immobilizer III Key has a extra little something in the metal body of the key (flip it open and look at the base). Not sure if it is a resistor or a chip, but you must have it and the secret code to tell the Immobilizer system to accept it. A standard key will not work - mechanically Yes, electronically No.
