RNS-E Upgrade
Ok,
I have made the decision to do it. I have a 2003 A8LQ. I am curious if:
a.) anyone else has done it in a 01-03?
b.) if there is any reason not to do it?
c.) besides getting the CAN bus behind the dash, if there is anything else wonky about it?

I'm in the process right now...
2003 A8L. Ordered a new unit from Clairparts the other day. If you're going new there is only one other unit in the country right now.
I'm going to use Nene's writeup for the install procedure. http://www.htms.org/rnse.html
The A6 unit's faceplate is large enough to fit the A8 with a little trimming. That's the only thing that keeps it from being a plug and play.
My picture poster has a few shots of a guys D2 S8 who did the install.
I still have to order the harness and most likely the bluetooth module but I'll keep you informed of my progress. Should take a few weeks until completion if all goes well and the ancillary parts are in stock.

I have been looking at this for a while trying to decide what the best option is ..
On page two of HZach attached url. the guy who installed the RSNE on his S8 says to use a system from an A4.
A4 RNS-E 4B0 035 192 P ( has analogue gala pin enabled )
He says to break off the bottom silver strip and round the top corners a bit to fit. I thought the A6 unit was wider?? have you found other wise?

I checked into this the 4B0 035 192 P part is for an A6. The A6 unit requires a lot of trimming. The A4 part is a direct fit (except for the silver trim at the bottom.) However this in not perfect either as the top mounting rails don't line up perfectly either. I am going with an A4 b6/b7 part. Cosmetically this will be the better fit. I am going to order my part next week. I will create a proper tech article and document the install.

That is the european part that requires software updates and the radio function is not the same...
as US bound units. I'll take a little extra trimming (US C5 A6 unit) and I'll get a brand new unit with a dealer warranty and a radio that fits US bandwidth parameters.
