Wouldn't it be terrible if the stock coding is what causes premature failures?! I wonder how many of the high mileage D2 transmissions were recoded vs. left on stock settings.
Following up on your re-code of your transmission.
- How's it going?
- Still notice the improvements: no more slow speed clunking?
- Is the transmission still shifting smooth?
- Would you do it again?
I'd definitely do it again.
If you don't have a PC, borrow a laptop from a friend, download free VCDS-Lite and get a $15 OBD-usb cable....it's just soft-coding of the TCM...doesn't hurt anything or hurt the car's drive-ability...you'll hardly notice it until you purposely use it.

After many trial and errors my 03 S8 "Tip" buttons now works like this:
"Tip" buttons always live. Works both in "D" and "S". No need to throw the shifter over to the right anymore. I just hit the "Tip" button, it either upshifts or downshifts, and stays in tip mod for about 10-12 seconds if I don't hit another shift.
Tools needed: Vag-com
Parts needed: zero
Cost: zero
This works on the 02 S8 too.
Perhaps also on the 02-03 A8 with "Tip" steering wheel.
Always write down the original codes before you change them, just in case.
1. Plug in vag-com
2. Verify steering wheel module, is coded 01015
3. Recode transmission module to, to 00132
That's it! Enjoy your "Tip on demand".

All tip tran's hold all other gears (2nd on up) to redline in tip mode regardless of throttle position, no matter what soft coding.
All tip tran's hold all other gears (2nd on up) to redline in tip mode regardless of throttle position, no matter what soft coding.
Maybe this is because my car is an early model (transmission code DSL). Also, even right before my transmission crapped out, it wasn't really creeping to the tallest gear unless unless the throttle is lifted off.
