Starter problems?
Stopped for gas on last Thurs. and when I tried to re-start my '97 A8, I got lights, radio etc. but no starter engaging. I get a click, but nothing else from the starter. I tried all the likely things like going from park to neutral and back in case it was some kind of link there, but no go. Wiggled key etc. nuttin'.
I did a search, and it does not seem like a common failure. Anyone with experience here? Bentley says you have to support engine and remove engine mounts!
Local shop with limited Audi experience flat-bedded the car, but I'm leary of them getting in there. My normal indy mechanic (besides me) is 100 miles away, and I'm not sure I want to pay for the flat-bed to his shop. Anybody have any thoughts or BTDT on this?

Your ignition switch is broken.
Lift the front end up and hold one end of a piece of wire to the big + terminal near the starter (passenger's side, behind the alternator) and touch the other end of the wire to the little wire on the starter. It will crank. The ignition switch doesn't let enough power trough the P-N-safety switch.

I thought about this also, but do ignition swithces go without ANY warning? For that matter, all the starters I have had go out on other cars have given some kind of warning before failure. In this case, no warning at all.

Probably the starter cable under the RH fender liner
There is a connection that corrodes going to the starter, I think you have to remove the feder liner on the RH front wheel, and you'll see it, all corroded.....just make a repair.

Here you go, but he has a different problem. If the terminal is corroded,
it will not crank and the alternator will not charge, but the starter would click since the control power for the starter comes from the ignition switch.
