trunk doesn't lock

trunk doesn't lock
When I use the remote, or when I lock-all with the key in the drivers door. Remote release opens the lid, but it looks like release is vacuum-operated, but lock/unlock is electrical?
(btw, the key has not worked since I bought the car, it won't even go in. I thought maybe the PO had replaced the cylinder or whole trunk lid.)
Anybody familiar with this problem?

Check this
1. Check the vacuum tube on the left of trunk cover (it's often disconnecting)
2. Check the position of keyhole (on the trunk). It must be vertically for operating from motor and horizontally for manual on/off

Nope. My key unlocks the glove compartment.
Either the lock cylinder is damaged or keyed differently.
What I can't figure out is, when I use the remote to lock the car, shouldn't the trunk lock as well? It doesn't. The vacuum actuates the trunk release mechanism just fine, and I can see that working.
I guess I don't understand, mechanically, how the car locks the rear lid via remote control.
