Windshield/Radar Detector Issues
My 2001 A8L has a "dual pane laminated acoustic glass" per the sales brochure. How different is this from the laminated safety glass used for some time in most cars. Is my glass definitely incompatible with radar detectors?? Any Valentine One experience in a 2001 A8 or A8L?? Thanks.

I'm betting you won't get any response from your detector
If you know any trouble spots where your detector goes off often, pop it in and drive by, but I'll bet you even money that you won't have it go off at all.......The only real way to "fix" this problem is one of the escort models where they mount radar and laser sensors in the front bumper, and laser sensors in the rear bumper, and lead them to a digital readout mounted anywhere you want......When I was looking at them, I think the SR-1 with installation was going to run me $1350 or so......the new one (sr-7) is even better, and cheaper (isn't technology fun??) What does "special glass" mean? I've read reference to the
"hot weather package" causing problems with radar detectors. Does this refer to the "solar sunroof panel" that exhausts air out of the cabin in hot weather? What does that have to do with the windshield? My Audi sales brochure says my car has "dual pane laminated acoustic glass" and tinted glass, with a dark tinted band at top of windshield. Will a radar detector work with my window?

There were several different types of windshield glass..
with different effects on dash mounted radar detector effectiveness.
The stock glass with the darkened border (radar detectors see through this OK).
A version with a metallic component to reflect light and keep heat down in the car (radar detectors virtually useless with this -- need an external mount and you sacrifice your "all around" view for detectors such as the V1).
I don't know what is referred to by "dual pane laminated acoustic" - all modern auto glass is a multi-layer laminate with plastic (i.e. "safety glass"). I don't think Audi offered something like MB has - they have a version with an air gap for better sound control and anti-fogging.
Nothing to do with the solar-powered vent that exhausts air via the sunroof if it is parked on a hot day. This may be bundled with a package that includes the "radar proof" windshield, though. I don't see this option currently in the US.

The dual pane laminated is like two normal laminated windshields with some filters between
Roll down your side window a bit and have a look. It's just like two layers of windows. If you have it. This one makes detectors useless.
There was other windscreens with the same effect, but not double layer. One had a kind of metallic, silvery looking outside. Never seen this on the 4,2, only on the V6's.
