Default Yesterday, it was time to do another tranny fluid and filter change.......

I did the first one around 90k,(it went into limp mode) the second 120k and now 133k,
I've always used Audi fluid with no additives.

I finished the fluid/filter change last night and took it for a test drive. The tranny shifts as smooth as ever, with no problems. It even shifts smoother now than when I bought the car 4 1/2 years ago with half the miles. I highly recommend changing the fluid and filter every 30k. This procedure, (Thanks Paul) replaces about 6.5-7 quarts of the 8.3 quart total fill.

Even if the fluid is really thick and black the first time you change it, "I" do not recommend doing a second fluid flush/change right away. Wait until next oil change. You do not want the fluid to get to "clean", (a new ATF fluid does a to "good" job loosing particles than the old one did) it might loosen bigger sediments inside the tranny, and clog something. I believe that one fluid/filter change every 20-30k will greatly prolong the life of your tranny. If this does not help your tranny, try adding some of this before going to a different fluid.

Disclaimer: I'm no mechanic, I only hope this info helps someone with tranny issues.

Default How did the fluid look after 13K and how did the magnets in the pan look?

And why not add the Lube Guard to the new fluid?

Default It didn't look to bad, but the fluid was pretty thick at the bottom of the pan.

The fluid was green/yellowish coming out, but black once in the bucket. The magnets each had sediments on them, About 1-2 mm thick on each magnet, not shavings like a chia pet, but more like thick gravy,(normal wear). I could have waited another 13k but I figured I rather do it now, (winter) than in the summer. I see no reason to add Lube Guard as long as a normal fluid/filter change does the job. Plan "B" would be to add Lubegard like I said earlier, before trying a different fluid altogether.

I do not think using Lubegard is wrong, but I see no reason for me to put it in, since I have had no problems with my tranny's.

Default Re: Is the procedure the same for a 2002 A8?

All of my questions I know are really dumb, but I really am learning a lot of stuff from you guys.

I've changed the fluid. Thanks to Paul's writeup it wasn't that hard. The trick is getting the car level. I used a set of rhino ramps,2 jack stands and a 4ft level.
