2006 S8 Engine Remanufacture
Hi all,
As it seems the S8 engine is rare and hard to come by in the UK, has anyone ever had the engine re-manufactured? I have a misfiring (on 8 cylinders) 5.2L V10 S8, and I need an idea of how much more expensive it is to have the engine re-manufactured, than buy a reconditioned one. I just need a ballpark figure to work with.
Thanks
Marking as solved

Audi say the engine needs removal to investigate what caused a valve in cylinder 1 to be stuck open. There is no compression at all on cylinder 1, and a rocker arm was found out of place, so sounds fairly serious. I'm not sure of the state of the rest of the cylinders apart from 7/8 misfiring.
Like anyone, I would love to keep costs down, but also looking for reliability going forward.

Audi say the car seems solid for its age. I do have dodgy mileage on the odometer but nothing in the paperwork that suggests any engine issues. As it uses a timing chain, I wasn't expecting to have anything to do on the engine, because it was a smooth drive up until the problem.

Hello Mikey,
Tell us what happened, did you over rev the engine, what lead up to this point, have you inspected and seen with your own eyes the rocker arm out of place, did you yourself do a compression test ?

No, I've been driving it like a hearse, because I hadn't driven an automatic for years. I just had a week and a half of driving time in it. Parked it up one night, then next morning I was on my way to work and heard the misfiring. It sounded awful. So took it to get a diagnostic at an Audi specialist and found 5 cylinders misfiring. They were perplexzed and said it wasn't normal.
Audi found the rocker arm not in place, and took photos. They also used a bore camera (I think) to take a photo of the valve stuck in the open position.
They took photos of the spark plugs which I bought the week before, and all but two were blackn. Only two plugs looked like new.

It has rocker arms, just like the W12 does, the rocker arm is under the cam, on one end of the rocker is a hydraulic damper, on the other end it rides on top of the valve stem, it's not like the A6 3.0 that had cam followers that sat right on the valve stem with the cam riding on the follower, hence no pivot, no rocker, the W12 and V10 have pivotal movement, so a rocker, the are even listed at the dealer as a rocker.
