So, my sunroof deflector motor started the notorious grinding AGAIN. Ah, so many notorious AUDI issues, so little time. It was replaced by AUDI Chattanooga under extended warranty on 06/08/2017. Yay, the repair warranty expired last month! I recalled from research at the time on these esteemed forums that there are two kludgy work-arounds, disconnect the motor or shim it. Here’s a vid of one proud AUDI A8 owner taking the first option:


I decided to shim it and tried a few things for shim material. I ended up cutting down an old hacksaw blade to a couple inches and folding it over leaving one side longer than the other. I shoved that up between the motor and the roof and tapped it snug with an AUDI H2001 persuader. Tested and amazingly the fix worked!

Thinking about this, I believe there was nothing wrong with original motor, when AUDI replaced it, they tightened up the new one enough to stop the grinding. And then it worked its way loose over a year. Because it’s a cheap crap mounting design.

an even more crude but quick thing is i manually push the wind deflector up, position sensor sees its fully up and motor stops running

I never open my sunroof, except to clear the drains.
