Default Prestige Audi (Denver) wants $3,200 to add AMI? WTF!!??

From the posts on this site, adding AMI seems relatively simple. However, I asked my dealer (Prestige Audi in Denver, CO) and they want $1200 for the parts, plus "about $2000 in labor because it's very complicated to deal with the wiring."

Is this blatant dishonesty? Or do they just not like doing it? And why not?

I'd say it's blatant dishonesty. You must not have any other Audi dealers in town to keep them on the level.

My install was $1,200 all in and I thought that was bad (only one Audi dealer in Indy and they hadn't installed one before). I think it was $800 for parts and $400 for the install. The wiring is about as simple as it gets (pull a plug, and plug something else in), so that's complete B.S.

It appears from other posts on the site that you can get the parts online and do the install yourself in about half an hour or so.

FWIW I have never regretted having it done and have gone further to get the Streaming Bluetooth adapter for it. I now get music wirelessly from my iPhone every time I get in the car. I now listen to my favorite Chicago radio station on the way into work in the morning and KCRW from Santa Monica on the way home. I hardly ever use Sirius any more.

Does AMI give you the ability to play mp3 CD-R ? I can't play them in my 07, perhaps because it doesn't have AMI?

Default AMI self-install

I installed an AMI in my car, and I would estimate it took closer to 1 hour. My local dealer wanted to charge 3 hours for labor to install (they had never installed an AMI). Pulling out the CD player took the most time, probably because I had never used the radio keys to release the tabs holding the player in the media bay. I already had the 2 bay glove box, so didn't need to replace it, and didn't drop it per the instructions.

I would highly recommend the retrofit kit, which provides a MOST fiber optic cable and Y power cable; they made installation a snap.

AMI gives you the capability of playing MP3s stored on a PMP (e.g. iPod) or USB thumb drive. It doesn't provide any functionality for CDs and is a totally separate device from the CD player, so the lack of an AMI is not the source of your problem.

The manual talks about playing mp3's burned onto a CD, but I do not see the menu options pictured in the manual. Do you know if it is a software or hardware option, or do our A8's just don't do it?
