Default sticky MMI buttons

I have a couple sticky buttons on my MMI unit

has anyone figured a way to clean them? I think it's about a grand to get a new board and I really only have 3 sticky buttons?

perhaps squirt some alcohol or???

Audi will tell you you need a new control board or entire MMI control panel. In some cases, if you leave it be it may eventually short out a switch and stop working but in almost every case it's just a matter of removing it, pulling it apart and cleaning all of the buttons.

The stickiness is whatever got spilled in there thickening up so getting rid of that (usually a carbonated, sugary drink) will fix the tactile issue. From there, cleaning the board with a true circuit board cleaner will ensure proper continued operation. I'm on one year with mine and it was pretty bad. Several buttons were stuck and the board had noticeable corrosion on it.

Welcome!

And, yes some topics are repeated a lot. I searched "replace center console" and this post was top of the returns.

This is a very nice PDF with pics. The project is for the wood trim replacement (I think), but the center console is part of the removal and replacement process. It's very well written. You will find a lot of really good write-ups on this forum.

Carry on...

Taking the assy out is very simple, see the DIY already linked to. But I´m not sure if the buttons snap out or if you need to open the unit before you can remove the buttons but I guess you will figure that out pretty fast once you have the unit out. Worst case probably just remove a few small torx and pry on some tabs to get it apart.

The unit needs to be removed before the buttons will come out. Once it's removed you then remove the screws from the bottom half and the top half will come off. The buttons will just fall out. Remember their location because some of them are similar in size.

You'll need to take the unit apart to fix the problem as it's not the actual switches that generally stick; it's the sides of the buttons and the holes that the buttons go through. These areas will be "sticky".

If liquid made it into the actual housing than it's highly recommended to get a contact cleaner and to take care of any visible liquid damage or corrosion. This can (and generally will) lead to the actual switches failing if not properly cleaned.
