It's normal that the transmission jumps from 3rd->4th gear especially when cold. Had this issue on both my W12 (2006&2008) and friend has it on 4,0TDI 2005 also. W12's had 203000-243000 respectively 295000-370000km on the clock while I own(ed) them, 4,0TDI has had 172000-230000km on the clock. Fluids changed on both 2006 W12 and 4,0TDI, really no difference, maybe a slight better shifts.

2008 W12 is going to get new fluids soon, no info if it has been swapped before.

And yes, the trannycooler rubber O-rings are a Place to leak. Did the on the 2006 W12. I have a leak on the 2008 W12 also, somewhere around the front of the tranny, but haven't found the exact leak yet.

And as said, fluid change will NOT blow your tranny. Often people do fluid change when it's just too late, like 2 weeks before the tranny blows up.

Called the dealer today to get a quote on having mine flushed/filter replaced, and they said they wouldn't do it. I was told that the fluid gets thicker as it ages, and the parts wear with the thicker fluid, so adding new thinner fluid could cause more problems than it's worth. I was also told (by the same dealership) last fall that my transmission gasket was leaking, and should be replaced. So... I was advised to live with any leaks that may be there.

What was said by this guy doesn't seem to mirror anyone else's experience with a fluid/filter change, so I'm trying to find a shop that will do it. Currently at 156k, and have no idea when or if the fluid was ever changed.

Default My experience

I bought my A8 with about 95k and started to get the occassional "hoot" soon after. I did a fluid (ZF gold)/filter change and the noise immediately went away and stayed the same until about 160k when I started to occassionally hear it again. This time I just did a fluid change, no filter and at 190k the noise hasn't returned. I might do another drain/refill soon and maybe go another 30k and do the filter again.

As mentioned, the outright failure of these six speeds are almost none so I would not be concerned about changing it.

Did a fluid change on my 2008 W12 on sunday. Had to replace right exhaust flex pipes so it was a good time to drop the tranny pan. Straightned the plan (previous owner had an accident denting the pan seriously) and put in a new filter (old was cracked because of the dent). About 10Qt of fresh oil (took off the pan, and added 5qt, removed oil cooler and flushed with 3x2qt exiting from the oil cooler). No apparent difference in shifting, old fluid was normal colo(u)r, light brownish. Only behaivioral difference is in 5th gear cruising at minimum throttle, rpm seemed to fluctuate at first, but then disappeared. Hope won't come back. Ex 2006 w12 did the same thing after swapping 5-6L+filter.

So can't really recommend doing fluid changes on theese, as it doesn't affect gear change quality or anything. Or it should be swapped like 4-6qt every 50-100.000km/30-60000mls, not like once over 300.000km/190tmls.

Well, you don't do fluid changes as a way to improve or fix something, in general. It's preventative maintenance. There was that TSB, but aside from that, it's recommended by ZF every 75k miles/120k kms, if I recall correctly. I wouldn't recommend a proper flush, but fluid changes are good to do.

1. Did you run the tranny/TCU adaptation cycle post flush? Worth a try.
2. If fluid change did little but shifting feels tired or missing a bit, next up would the the solenoid swap out. But that is another pan drop and then valve body removal (Mechatronics). Complete W12 specific solenoid set parts cost here in US was about USD$500 from ZF distributor when I did it some years ago.

I did a pan drop with filter and ATF change (to Redline D6) a few years back at 85k/11 years. It definitely improved shift quality and shift speed in my case.

I would do the fluid change, but not the flush. Flush almost always precedes a rebuild. I had the tranny on my D2 rebuilt by Tozo. I shipped it and saved alot of money compared to what Audi wanted to RandR it.

Anyone have advice on where to buy the pan gasket and filter for a 2007 A8 Quattro 4.2? It is a sport model and has the transmission cooler if that matters. I read blauparts and their ordering process seems convoluted with TSB warnings, etc. if I get the gasket and filter, do I need anything else besides fluid? Should I look at any other o-rings, gaskets to replace while in there? Thanks in advance.

Why doing all this, something wrong with the transmission or just being bored
Cheers,
