I believe it's on all A8/S8's.

There's a split in the 2012's somewhere when it became standard.
Mine doesn't have it even though it's a "late split" due to manufacture date, or so I was told.

The manual that came with the vehicle doesn't mention it.
The extra manual I ordered to keep in my office discusses it.

Would be great if it was just a software feature, but per another thread here I think it's sensors in the underside of the bumper cover that make it work.

I did look like a complete fool trying to make it work before figuring out it wasn't there....

I can get mine to work 99.9% of the time and with one kick only. Stay in the middle and one left foot kick, not too fast nor slow.

According to the information I have, the 'Virtual Pedal' became standard on cars fitted with the electric tailgate (option code 4E7) from calendar week 45 in 2011.

How I have the hang of it...

Use your LEFT foot, kick just off center to the left side of center, one or two kicks. The manual says twice...

I've gotten it to work 100% so far since doing the Left Hand Audi Hokey-Pokey.

Perhaps you have to do the Right Hand Audi Hokey-Pokey if you're in the UK?

Such a nice trick...almost always gets a "How did you do that?!?!?"

Although I think this is a very handy feature, my success rate has been very low and I've become very self-conscious to try it in parking lots. I'm sure people wonder just what the heck it is I'm trying to do. Perhaps it just is a matter of practice and foot position.

There should be an owners manual supplement that does a better job of explaining how to get it to work. You basically want to be in the center of the trunk and kick inward. I have had %100 success rate by going center of rear bumper and almost kicking the under tray. Once you figure out the sweet spot it works every time.
