Anyone found a way to have texts read over speakers? Sad not to have a feature that almost every recent model car has

No idea. I'd have thought it could use the same program that reads street names to do so, but I haven't seen anybody who has found a way to accomplish that. I can see it being nice to have, at times. I like the setup where you can send one of a few preset replies to tell people you're busy.

Depends on the type of phone you have.

I use a windows phone in my '12 D4 and texts are read and can be entered just fine.

Siri reads them to me with my with my IPhone 6 thru Bluetooth also.

Galaxy 5S, no luck. Tried a few apps that should use bluetooth to read out sms messages but I can't seem to find one that works.

I'm a bit surprised by this; thought it would be a standard feature on all 'modern' phones.

Worth checking the bluetooth profile on your phone and see how it's set up to pair with the car.
You may see entries like 'headset', or 'music', 'telephone', etc..
If your phone supports bth 4.0 or higher (most recent ish phones should) then you should get the option of choosing which profile is used to connect to the car.
Headset usually get most functionality - music and phone just limit the phone apps that have access to the phones bluetooth radio.
