I would try and get the complete front loom from the car the engine came out of. This should then go right back to the fuse panel. The plugs for the engine should then be obvious because they will be the right length.

I have the complete front loom
but it is going into a 86 4000cs quattro
so none of the plugs match.
82 Diesel Vanagon 5 speed
86 Turbo diesel Jetta 6 speed
86 4000cs Quattro (hopefully with 2.5L TDI this winter)
74 914 2.0
76 2002

So, you must have the 5cyl, not the V6?......
I would try and find a totalled A6 2.5td "red i" and get the loom from that?
You will need to re-calibrate the settings on the back of the instrument cluster in the dash as well - there is a small slider switch to select which engine is fitted I think?
