Avant Rear hatch problem
I'm having some trouble opening my rear hatch on my '98 A6 Avant. This morning it worked fine once, but after i closed the door i couldn't get it open again. it feels like the handle is loose. i also tried to open it from the inside with no luck. i read on the forum that the mechanism might need to be tightened a bit. How does one go about this, and how can i get the hatch open in order to remove the trim?

I fixed a similar problem on Todd's moms avant.
There was a pin on the handle that worked its way out over time. If you remove the interior hatch trim and the wiper motor you should be able to slide the pin back in without taking everything apart. It still wasn't a very easy task.

latch. Very easy to adjust but getting to them is a bitch. There is a way to access the mechanism pretty easily and it might give you enough room to work with:
On the inside of the hatch door are two rectangular carpet panels on either side, they actually look like one solid piece but they are hinged to open on the outer edges. Work those edges loose, pull them out and you'll be able to get inside the back hatch area. If you take out your rear tail light lenses it might give you some more access or at least more light to see what's going on. Basically, the long rods are kinda goldish color and have black plastic tension sliders if this makes sense, just shorten the amount of tension necessary to unlatch the lock mechanism. I have pics of this in my other computer, would be happy to send them to you when I get a chance.

I know what you are talking about and i'll look into seeing if i can get good access there. I would like to have any pictures you might have if it isn't any trouble getting to them. Thanks for the help.
