Does the gear selector lock in P when the key is removed?
In my '96 it can be taken out of park and put into any gear with the key out. Also, when it's running, when you depress the brake pedal, there is a definite "click" that comes from inside the console near the shift ****. It's always been this way since I bought the car 3 years ago, but somehow I don't think that's the way it's supposed to be. I assume a pin or something has come undone in the shift mechanism?
So, another thing is how to get at the mechanism. You dont have to remove the whole center console do you?

The shift should be locked in park when the key is removed. Likewise the key can't normally be removed if the shift is not in park.
You need access to the Bentley manual to make the adjustment correctly.

Okay I figured it out
The click is the neutral safety switch, and the problem of not locking in P was the cable that pushes a plunger onto the plastic cog on the shifter that holds it in place while in park. It just happened that the cable can be adjusted in and out and mine was too far out to make contact on the the lever. And yes, I removed the center console to do it.
