Default help

my car is making a funny noise from the front left tire when i turn to the left, i took it to a mechanic and he said that it was probably the axle joint, thats like $250 plus labor, any other thing that it could be that i could suggest, before it goes under the knife?

Default Is the noise related to the speed at which you are traveling?

If so, then he's probably right... CV joint. If you have it replaced, you should also replace the inner and outer boots... since those are likely to crack sooner or later, and you'll save a couple hours labor if you do it now rather than waiting for them to crack, and then having the whole thing taken apart again.

Default Try this....

Take it to a big parking lot and turn hard left, if it starts making a clicking noise then your cv is about to go, if it makes a loud popping noise then your cv is gone. Check the wheel well and axle for grease. Most of the time the cv goes because the boot has blown. If you look around you can find an axle cheaper than $250. I get my axles from CV Source in Atlanta Ga. They do a great job at rebuilding the axle.

im taking it in next thursday, they are replacing the cv joint and both inner and outer boots, they said that that qould be the best way to go. thanks for the help

Ok, just a little info because I don't want to see you get screwed. I just looked on advance auto parts web site and you can get a reman axle for your car for $100-$120. I would trust one of these axles before I trusted something that an auto shop would do. Mainly, because you never know what you are getting that way. Autoshop guys don't do axles everyday, reman shops do. So who are you going to trust more with your axle. So what I would do is, don't tell the auto shop what you are doing but ask them how much they are charging you for removing and installing the axle. Then ask them if they will install an axle that you provide. Some shops will not. Then order your axle and have them put it on for you. You will be charged a core charge on the axle so make sure that you get your old axle back as well as the package so you can ship it back. Takes a little more work on your part, but a $130 price difference is worth it. One last thing, the shop will probably try to tell you that they will not warrant the work if you supply your own axle. Guess what, most auto shops don't anyway. When you try to tell them there is a problem with something that they did, they will try to blame it on something else to get more of your money.
