help please ac issues

96 A6 138K. JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS CAR(AIR NOT COLD OBVIOUSLY LEAK SOMEWHERE), GOT THE LOW SIDE ADAPTER AND FILLED IT. EVERYTHING WORKS GREAT BLOWS COLD BUT NEXT DAY WARM AGAIN.HERES WHERE I AM NOW...... THERE ARE NO VISABLE LEAKS ANYWHERE, CONDENSOR,COMPESSOR,DRYER ALL FINE AS WELL AS NO LEAKS IN ANY LINES OR UNIONS. I DO HEAR A HISSING NOISE(LIKE A VAC LEAK) COMING FROM INSIDE THE BLACK BOX AGAINST THE FIREWALL JUST AFTER THE LOW SIDE PORT. QUESTION.....IS THIS THE EVAPORATOR OR JUST A PRECOOLER. I HAVE ENTIRE COWL AND WIPERS OFF AS WELL AS GLOVE BOX OUT SO WHERE DO WE GO NOW? I STRONGLY SUSPECT THE LEAK IS IN THAT BOX. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. ALSO WHAT IS THE BEST REPAIR MANUAL FOR THIS CAR AND HOW WOULD I ACQUIRE IT? THANKS

sounds like the evaporator, if it's that bad of a leak you might want to pick up a

new accumulator/drier, as there is desiccant in it that absorbs water in the system, since the system leaks some moisture probably got in there and the desiccant would be full.

Where exactly is the accumulator? So what your saying is that whats in the black box is the evap? Also is the bentley book the best reference tool? thanks for your help.

Yes the "black box" contains the Evaporator, heater core, and flap doors to select modes. I can't recall the exact placement of the accumulator but it is in-line between the evaporator and the compressor. Bentley is a great reference

Just got the evap out, wonder if the manual tells ya the the box is crazy glued shut. got it out and reinstalled got 134a in it and STILL....no obvious leaks. Cleaned everything with brake clean and tommorow will check for oil or slickness. Do you know how much the system holds, thought i had read somewhere 1.7lbs. Just want to see some evidence of a leak so i can fix it. Thanks

Mastercool makes the adapter but its hard to find. I called napa and it took them some looking but came up with napa part#78-3618. mastercools part # is 82272 but they had to go to a book to get it but had it the next day.
