Replace the timing belt where things are (assuming you moved nothing). Then rotate to the position prescribed by the tools, and use the proper tools from there to set the cam timing.

everything was moved, what now..? the "wings" on the cam sprockets are supposed to be horrizontal with the large holes close to each other when the crank is at TDC correct?

Default Nothing is screwed up yet.

You aren't supposed to mark on the belt anyways, you're supposed to use the correct tools. It's the ONLY way to do it right. I would normally offer to rent mine out, but it looks like I might be needing them soon. You can get them on Ebay for $100 or make a post asking to borrow them on the 12v forum.

Default tough to tell...here's what I would do:

I'd put the original belt back on like Bmthorn said, trying to approximate the original locations of the cam sprockets.

Then I'd start GENTLEY rotating the engine clockwise using the big 12 point nut on the crank until the mark on the front pulley lined up with the scribed timing mark on the plastic cover on top of the pulley.

IF you feel any resistance, i.e. piston hitting a valve I'd stop, loosen the timing belt, move the camshaft by hand a bit, and continue on.

The mark on the main pulley will line up with the scribed mark then the cams are in 2 different positions, 180 degrees apart. I forget if the big holes on the cam sprockets are supposed to be on the inside or outside, but someone else will remember (or I can find a photo somewhere).

You may get lucky and get everything lined up without having to screw around with turning the cams by hand, or it might be a nightmare getting it set back up. I'd want to have an extra set of hands or two to make the process go easier.

Default PS....the engine is NOT set at TDC for the timing belt service.

not sure exactly where it IS...but it's not TDC, as was pointed out to me a little while back.

One timing tool is a pin that goes in the crank sensor hole under the car and locks the crank in place. The other tool holds the cams in place...as such (looks like big holes are "in"):

Default You can rotate the cams without interference when the lifters aren't pumped up.

Apparently this motor is only sometimes an interference motor. So I wouldn't worry the process of getting everything lined up once the tools are at hand.

That's good to know. Evidently my lifters were still 'pumped' when I tried it.
