Default What is the setting on the magic decoder ring to remove the spare from....

underneath the rear seat in Avant? I obviously am doing something wrong because as far as I have tried, the spare hits the bottom of the third seat and/or gets hung up on the black "volcano" that the spare is mounted to. I know if I remove the seat bottom I can get it out but that doesn't seem to be a user friendly solution, i.e. a wife having to use a 24 mm socket to get at the spare on the side of the road.

TIA (I did search the archives but didn't find what I was looking for)

Default That's the only way to do it.

The only way to get the spare tire out is to remove the 3rd seat. The bolt holding the seat is removed with the lug wrench. It's a bad design, but that's the way it is. Why you would need a 24mm socket is a mystery though. I think you're looking at the wrong bolt.

Default I take back some of the above. There is a knurled wheel attached to the bolt to allow removal by ...

hand, once it is started with the lug wrench.

Well, at least in theory. In practise, I had to use a 19 mm wrench to hold the captive nut from turning in order to loosen the knurled bolt. Then it moved by hand.

Default You're kidding.... I never have a problem pulling out the spare on my '92 100q avant.

And I have used it before, on the side of the road...

Default Yes. All I did was flip the seat up, then pull out the spare cover panel and foam"spacer".

Then the spare just slides out, between the seat bottom and the back of the compartment.

Does your spare mount to a black plastic "volcano"?
