4000cs quattro locking differential question

4000cs quattro locking differential question
So I just bought an 86 4000cs quattro a couple days ago, first audi (yay!), but I have a question about the locking diffs. The diff lock selector isn't set to 1 or 2, just....off, but the light for my rear diff lock is on. I'm new to these cars so I'm not sure about it. Any info on this would be nice. I'm posting a photo with this. Thanks!

You could just have a bad sensor (which is basically just a switch on the differential), but it's just as likely that it's stuck. Try turning the switch on and off as well as slowly backing up and then forward. If that doesn't work then you can crawl under the car and see what it looks like. Could be the actuator is bad or it's stuck with road grime.

Yeah, just see if it breaks loose by doing that. Otherwise you'll have to do it by hand. Or when you crawl under there you might see that it's working (get someone to run the switch for you) and in that case it's just the sensor and I wouldn't personally worry about it, but it is fixable.
The thing about the rear diff lock is that it's meant to just get you unstuck, so it usually unlocks by itself, so it shouldn't stay engaged regardless.
