Default 1989 200 audi for $600 on craigslist needs wiring harness - good deal?

Ad says:

"89 Audi 200 turbo. has an inline 5cyl. 86,000 original miles on car. has 19inch audi wheels, all leather interior, power everything. needs engine wiring harness. have basically rebuilt the whole top end of engine. just need to get rid of some cars. asking $600 only because it does need the engines wiring harness. before the wiring got messed up the car ran amazing and got awesome gas milaige."

Do you guys think it's worth it? How difficult and costly would it be to rewire this thing? Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

Oh this is unreal!

I actually have seen this car in person! I looked at it a few weeks back, and although had the potential to be a really nice car... it's just out of the realm of feasibility (for myself).

The guy had the car stored at this girlfriends-grandmothers house, in the deserts of Nevada. Dogs had gotten to the car, and ripped most of the main engine wiring off. The guy mentioned on the phone that it ALSO needs a new radiator. When I got there he revealed the car needed this radiator because his mother was driving the car in a parking lot when the sun caught her eye and she crashed into a pole. He goes on to tell me that the front bumpers paint doesn't match because they replaced the smashed one with another audi 100 bumper, who's grill wasn't the same causing a gap near the headlights. The rims currently on the car are 19's 5 spoke (I think) genuine audi rims. They were pretty curbed rashed, and NEEDED new tires that the guy supposedly could get for free. He also said that the tires were too big, and would rub when carrying passengers in the backseats.

On a positive note, the guy said that he had invested nearly 7k into the motor, top end rebuild being the only thing I can remember. It had less than 100k miles on it, the paint is the VERY rare and VERY beautiful, "blueish silver" that could really use a re-spray of. It had pretty decent interior. The leather seats were some of the best I have seen, but the stitching holding the leather together was starting to give, and was spreading. Other than that the car has less than 100k on it.

I'm not at all trying to bash this guy and his Audi. After all, he seemed like somewhat of an enthusiast, and obviously cared for this car very much. I wouldn't say this car is a TERRIBLE deal, I mean it is a $600 car. Just be forewarned that there are some hidden details, and long road to recovery.

I would recomend that autodata shows you good engine wiring diagram and you can rewire wiring better than buying, why dont DIY

Oh wow thanks so much for the reply on this. He's texting me all the details right now too actually. He told me what color it was and about the radiator and dogs. The problem for me is I'm a 4 hour drive away in California and I wanted to know if it's worth towing here. I have no problem with fixing it myself, it'll teach me something anyways. I definitely would need help with the wiring harness though.

I don't see an edit button for my post.. but I just talked to him some more and he said it needs a new thermostat but hasn't said anything about tires yet. I'm waiting on pictures and I'm going to see if I have a generous friend that would like to make a 6hr round trip to go pick it up.

I'd buy it!! The amount of money you'll save on parts alone makes it worth the trip.
Are you adding to a fleet or starting one?
I just drove 3.5 hrs one way to grab a 200 automatic friday night after work. Green with heated blue leather seats. I swapped the seats (mine were crushed velour), the sunroof and the ISV into my '86. The donor also came with studded snows and a set of performance tires which were not mentioned in the add or during conversation. The best part is the seller called me and lowered the price from $400 to $250 while I was on my way due to the car not starting. I'm pulling the motor from this beast tomorrow as you can never have too many spares, lol. (oh yeah, it runs and drives awesome)
Hey if my patience persist I'll see if I can save the harness for yah, but no promises.

Oh wow that would be awesome. If you have an extra radiator and thermostat from that too I'd pay shipping and a little on top. ;o Where do you live? I'm Cali 95685. This would be my first car actually.

I already replied to this post but it never showed up.. :/ but anyways..
That's great news if you can! This would be my first car.. so I don't have much knowledge of fixing cars so I'm a little wary about having to do this stuff. Would you also have a radiator and thermostat laying around? How much shipped to 95685?

New radiator will only be $100-$150 tops so not worth shipping used with no warranty, oh and never re-use a thermostat, not worth it either (new less than ($20). As far as the wiring harness I did manage to save what I think is most of it. I assume you're looking to get it all the way to the computer? Let me look into that. I will check shipping to I assume (again) california and will try to pull remainder of harness out by Thursday.
P.S. I won;t gouge you. Like the guy I bought my car from friday told me "I'd rather the car/parts goes to someone who will use them"........U need an automatic tranny, lol?

You're right I looked up the thermostat and radiator already online and bookmarked it to purchase later. I sent you a pm and asked another question. I really appreciate all the help. This car is a 5 speed and I never want to touch an automatic again. sorry lol. Yeah I'm in California. Thanks again!
