check engine

what does it mean when the check engine light comes on and goes off when i accelerate semi hard and on in 2nd and above?

engine has been retarded the maximum amount to stop knock.

either you have crappy gas, running too lean, or knock sensor is picking something else up (really noisy lifters?)

intake air temp sensor mounted in the intercooler...

No intercooler on a V8...which is what Kyle has

agree^^^^^^^^^^^

as far as the gas you NEED to put high test in the 4.2..not regular unleded. This isn't you'r ol A6!

How long has the knock sensor light been going off?

CEL lights on the V8 weren't pluged in....

....you have to DIY. Not sure if Shives..you'r ol 4.2 V8 had it pluged in? But I would suspect that Shiv..or you hooked it up.
What about the other V8's you've had? You hook the connectors up on those?
