Default Noob intro with some questions

Wow, this place is great. I'm a long-time BMW CCA guy that just had the good fortune to pick up a Tornado Red 200TQ 10V Avant. Current mileage stands at 175K and the previous owner was fanatical with maintenance. A few questions:

1) How long should the car idle after driving? Is this necessary?

2) How often should the oil be changed? Currently running 10W-30 Mobil 1 Synthetic.

3) I noticed the passenger front CV boot looks wet. I haven't had a chance to get it on a lift yet but are these difficult to change?

4) Any other recommendations before winter driving?

The looks I"m getting on the road in NJ are priceless - you would think a UFO just landed. I'm also amazed at how solid these cars still feel after 20+ years... sort of like my old 535i with a LOT more space.

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Default where in jersey you at? Idling after driving is only really necessary after a very hard/high boost

run so that the turbo has a chance to cool off a little better. when you just shut the key off oil flow stops completely. I change my oil about every 4k miles, 3-4k is generally a good range for typical driving conditions. Just make sure everything is solid for the winter, touch up any rust you can find, etc. The salt they use in the winter here in jersey will destroy a car in short order... CV boots aren't TOO bad as far as cv boots go. Look it up in the bentley repair manual for the step by step directions

Bloomfield, NJ. Thanks for the advice. The car is completely rust free and spotless underneath. Everything - down to the brake lines - looks like it just left the factory! I plan to keep it that way.

Default bloomfield, huh? I live in livingston, but go to school near trenton.....

Good to hear your car is rust free, do yourself a favor and take some spray rust inhibitor or something your brake/fuel lines and anything you don't want rusting periodically....

Default Welcome, cool another NJ alumnis, the car running/idling

aftre you turn the car off is the afterrun system, you have a secondary waterpump that kicks on with the radiator to run and cool the coolant for a few minutes after shut-off, so you do not get the typical coking of the oil in the turbo. HTH. Bookmark SJM's site for trouble shooting tips, wealth o' knowledge.

BTW I'm in central/southern jersey too.

Definitely helps - good to know! I should hear the secondary waterpump running after shut off, right? I need to listen more closely next time, but I didn't hear anything running in the first few minutes after the 1+ hour drive home...

Also, I noticed the car is running exceptionally cool - both the regular temp and water temp gauge never get above the third mark in the "C" zone and ~75 degress. With the car running, I can see the fan in front of the radiator is constantly on - is this normal or do I need a new switch / sensor? Is there something else I need to look at (t-stat maybe)? The PO mentioned these cars run cool...

With everyone within driving distance of each other, how about a meet and drive?

Default yea, after you shut the car off after a decent run the fan should click on

in addition to the aux water pump. Fan should not be running all the time, unless you have some sort of climate control turned on. I think that temp sounds fine, esp because it's been getting cooler out. When was the last time the t-belt was done on the car? if it's been a while it never hurts to do that, the water pump, the t-stat, etc. A meet and drive would be pretty cool, just gotta fit it into my school sched, and hope my car is back into commission... I've got a decent amount of winter projects to accomplish here... Injectors, alt, aux trans cooler.....

Default Re: yea, after you shut the car off after a decent run the fan should click on

T-belt, waterpump, shocks (Bilsteins), brakes, and a few other big ticket items were all done May of this year.

I have the ECC set to "Auto" at 72 which I don't think would cause the fan to turn on, so I will have to investigate why the fan is running all the time. I will also have to take it for a good run tonight and see if the aux. water pump and fan are running after shut off.

I'll post some tentative dates later tonight for a meet and drive and see what works for everyone. I'll also try and and get some pictures this weekend.

Again, thanks for all the help. I'll be spending some time here...

Default the fan is always on whenever the ac comp is set to cycle. which is pretty much whenever

the cc head is set to auto. try shutting of the CC and see if it shuts the fan off. Also check out justfourrings.com, it can be a pretty slow paced forum but its a great group of guys that run it
