power steering fluid for my 86 audi 5000

Pentosin CHF 7.1 is the ps fluid specified by Audi for pre-1987 hydraulic systems. You can use the 11S that was required for 1987 on with no problem. The 7.1 usually is less expensive.

While you can find HYDRAULIC fluid many places, it is not compatible with the mineral based Pentosin 7.1 or 11S found in our cars (or the Febi-Bilstein equivalent). If you want to change, you would need to drain and flush the entire system. I'd also recommend adding a filter and larger reservoir. Most of the factory reservoirs are too small to effectively remove heat from the system, and the mineral based fluids don't handle heat well to begin with.

Drain it/flush....and refill with Mobil 1 ATF. You'll need about 2 qts. I paid $6.99 per qt. at Meier Supermkt. You can also use Valvoline ATF+4 or Redline ATF if you can't find Mobil 1. Synthetic ATF is the way to go.
I did this on my 86T and it performs great. And its sooooo much better than using an overpriced, 1985 technology fluid. It handles system heat better than pentosin, so no need for a larger reservoir. It even helped with the small rack leak I had. Make sure you clean your reservoir screen thoroughly. I even added a small magnet in the reservoir to pick up any stray metal shavings from my new ps pump.
I've had this car for 22 yrs. Why the hell didn't I do this a decade ago !
