I have a 1991 200 20 valve avant with rear wiper problems. About a month ago, I turned it on and the nozzle sprayed but no wiper action. Shortly after that I started smelling burning plastic. The motor was very hot to touch and smelled horrible. I disconnected the motor at the connection. Yesterday I got a another wiper motor. Connected the motor. Exactly the same outcome. Nozzle sprayed but no wiper action. It started smelling nasty shortly thereafter. I checked the voltage on the connector and it reads 11.5 volts on the car side of the connector when the ignition is on but the lever is not depressed. It seems to me that there is constant volatge running there. Do you have any thoughts/suggestions?

There is a separate relay controlling the rear window wiper on Avants. It's in the auxiliary relay panel behind the driver kneebar. It's supposed to be the bottom right hand relay in that panel. You might want to pop that out, take off the cover and see if the moveable contacts aren't frozen together.

I finally took the relay apart. It was the top left one next to the seat heater relays. The moving part is not stuck. I am not an electrical genius but when the relay was removed the meter still read 11.76 volts on the supply side of the wiring on the hatch. When I plug the wiper in I hear a buzz from the motor, no movement and some nasty stink. I put on another motor and the same results. any ideas?
