Default After tons of searching I still believe the Magnefine Filter for power steering fluid...

to be the best value/bang-for the-buck alternative out there. So much so I'm going to order a couple today and install one in my reservoir return line. Certainly can't hurt anythng and I'm curious to see how much magnetic debris gets past it and stuck to my magnetic dipstick.

I pored over the internet last night looking at various inline and remote-mount filtration systems for ATFs and power steering units and this one is far-and-away the most prominent one out there and by a HUGE amount! I scanned the forums where these have been used and there's nothing to sway me from considering using one. Couldn't find even a single dissatisfied/disgruntled customer. Hell, even the Bob Is The Oil Guy forum doesn't slam it or dismiss it as worthwhile and those guys are the toughest to please people on the planet! They hate EVERYTHING!

I also discovered it has a full-flow oil bypass built in so that if filter becomes clogged it goes into "filter bypass" but still removes magnetic debris! And anyone that's peeked into an Audi PS resevoir on ANY vintage chassis Audi KNOWS something like this is needed. Hell, it shouldn't even be an option... it shoulda been there all along!

The filter is not serviceable and relies on replacement instead. They offer no recommended interval for use in a PS application but recommend 12 month intervals for automatic transmission use. Well an auto tranny generates a TON more particulate debris than a PS system what with clutches, bands and high friction surfaces... that's why they have built-in filters! A PS system such as ours could probably get away with 5-6 year change intervals easily and "probably" more than 10 years. I believe an auto tranny probably generates closer to 25-30 times the filterable garbage of a PS system but I prefer to err on the side of conservatism. If reservoir were drained and filled with fresh fluid before installing initial Magnefine filter installation tomorrow I wouldn't think twice about driving with it until April of 2015. But I'm ordering 2 today as I know they'll NEVER be cheaper!

Normally the filter/installation kit sells for $39.95 and comes with either 5/16" or 3/8" inlet/outlet hose barbs. And 1/2" inlet/outlet for $5.00 more. Someone will need to measure the inlet/outlet barbs on the OEM reservoir to know which size fits best. But they can be puchased online, direct from the manufacturer right now for $15.00. (I have no idea about shipping costs yet)

I just can't find a better value or anything that comes even remotely close to this given its 10-15 minute installation time, magnetic and particulate debris filtation for less than 10-15 times that much money. To me there's simply no down-side to throwing $15-20 at our power steering system for this kinda filtration.

I've enclosed a link where you can see it, read about it and form your own conclusions. Additionally, if you do a search at google and select "images" there's tons of pics from images of the filter to installations with the filter.

BTW I did find 2-3 listed at Ebay for a whopping 25 cents less than the manufacturer's special online deal ;-)

Magnefine Filter

Default I was just looking at what may be the same thing on a friend's Volvo...

but that is a good price. His was 28.50 from the good folks at IPD. Apparently it's very popular.

Default appears they're selling the stew out of em to the OEM and automakers...

I found a site last night that showed one with a Ford logo/part number decal and the text said Ford had just purchased 2 million of them for their truck series chassis's w/auto trans. Also a Google search for them under the "images" feature shows a LOT of them with private labeling. Easy to spot the 12-ring ribs that grow slightly near the label where that big ol "donut" magnet is hiding inside.

If the amount of internet info on them is any indication it would seem we're the last to know!
