Default He's not talking about a "racing" O1E. O1E's came stock, in both 5 and 6 speed configuration, in...

...the later S2's, RS2's, C4/6 (ur-S4/6), and a few others.

Howdy! Yes I was speaking of the stock 01E 6 speeds. Though I am intriqued to hear about these "racing" 01E's. Are they stuffed with VAG Motorsports internals? Strengthened diff? I'd love to know more.

When talking about extra HP, I assumed you were also, regarding the trannies. They do have different guts. #1 no center diff, it's locked at 50/50 f/r. Also they're limited slip, with a final of either 4.11 or 4.86 depending on vintage. Since they're under a lot higher stress, the gears are hardened. I don't know of any spare ones in the US right now, but they occasionally do surface. The last I saw went for $12K, as i mentioned before. Oh, and their noisy as hell too.

you've NEVER looked at a straight 5 without the head on it have you... Ain't no WAY I'd bore it past 83mm (2nd factory oversize). There is NOT a lot of "meat" between the cylinders. Take a look at the bare block picture on my website of the 7A with the standard 82.5mm bore (my spare long block). "Same" block as an AAN/ABY just larger bore. Now tell me if you want to run lots of boost on cylinder walls that are even thinner than what the 7A has. I sure as hell wouldn't, unless I had several short blocks laying around. Granted, thats my opinion, but take measurements, and get out a calculator and figure out the wall thickness of an 83 or 83.5mm bore 5cyl. Not much left there for a high boost application. Audi goes with the 79-81mm bore on the turbo engines for a reason. Ever wonder why those engines last so long?
