Default My Coupe Won't Stay in Gear. . .WTF?

Alright cats, here's the deal. The old CQ doesn't wanna stay in gear. I can hold the shifter in place while driving and we're good to go. . .but it gets a little old. The previous owner said he was missing a "bushing" out of the shifter assembly, but I have an inkling that he has no idea what the hell he's talking about. And that is why I'm here. . .to let the lords of the Audi forums bestow their knowledge upon me. Throwout bearing, broken shifter assembly, ??? What the hell is going on with my Coupe gentlemen? Any ideas?

Default If you can actually travel & move between gears then you can eliminate anything clutch related

It's either internal to the transmission or else, as you've mentioned, something buggered with the shifter.

Pulling apart the shifter & associated linkage on these cars is pretty straight forward. I'd start there as it'll be the easiest and cheapest to fix should you find a problem. If that yields nada then you are almost bound to pulling the tranny (which is obviously not an easy job)

Popping out of gear sounds like a trans issue. Might be shift linkage problem, but I doubt it.

Awesome guys. . .thanks for the quick responses. I'll pull the shifter linkage tonight and pray to God. We'll see if he indeed wants me to be happy. . .

Default bad synchro maybe. Is it 3rd gear?

-in my experience, that is the most common one to fail.

Default Well I can tell you what was wrong with mine when that happened

I have one that does that (pretty badly too). The PO replaced the slave cylinder but I suspected something else. I went through the linkage as QP advised you to do as well. That was fine, so I decided to at least look at the tranny fluid. I removed the drain plug and nothing came out. Since I already pulled the filler plug and I knew there was fluid in there, I knew this was not right. I fished around the drain hole and it was clogged. Clogged with all sorts of metal paste and bits of metal and bearings and bearing race. It was a mess. I just parked it for now since I've got other projects, but I suspect the input shaft bearing exploded. I would have thought the PO would have noticed some sort of big huge bang, but then again.

I'd start with the linkage then check the fluid for any evidence of ugliness. I hope yours isn't the same problem.

in my 90 2nd has a pretty good tendency to grind if one isn't careful

Yeah, 2nd gear was the one that failed on me too. Never popped out of gear though.
