One more kick at the ol dead horse, tranny question one hundred and three..>>miktip...?
I have an '88 90 quattro. I put a new clutch and a used tranny in. The tranny was tested before it was taken out of the donar and worked fine.
When i put the car back together it shifted ok and the clutch engaged. I went to move the car but the calipers were stuck from being lined up so after a couple of attempts i decided to get my car pushed to break it loose. After that i got in and, after being lined up for three months i was pretty excited, put it in gear let out on the clutch and as it started to engage it started to make a dull grinding type of sound and wouldn't move. This happens in all gears but if i let out the clutch in neutral it doesn't happen. It seems ot go into each gear as the sound it makes changes in pitch as the gears get higher. Again the sound is almost a dull grind or rub. However not the grind you get if the cltuch isn't depressed all the way before shifting
The clutch kit came with the throw-out bearing so that shouldn't be an issue. However one of the clips on the bearing seemed weak, could this cause a problem?
Also my line to the slave was after going bad, so i made up one using a car flex house and brake line to get me by until the real line came in the mail. I have been talknig to alot of people to rule out every possible small thing and one guy said that could be the problem, where the new line isn;t big enough, 3/8 vs 1/4. He said that the slave, being auto adjusting, may not be returning all the way. This made sense as twice the second time i was at it the clutch didn't return all the way. So i took the bolt out of the slave and pulled it back the same problem continued.
Could this still be the problem?
Also i only had a one lt bottle of gear oil here when i put it back together. Could this little of an amount have contributed to the problem. And this oil was approved for gl-4 and gl-5 gear box
requirements and was semi-synthetic. Should i have gone with a GL-4 only? I have looked around everywhere and can't seem to find GL-4.
After reading the archieves for two hours last week i got all excited it may be the shift linkage, however i got under the car and shifted it manually but the same thing.
What else could it be. i have posted here a few times but can;t seem to get any responses. I am renting a garage this weekend for three days, but if it is something simple i would like to avoid taking out the gear box and use that time to do my timing belt and water pump as well as fuel lines. Nt to mention avoid the tow charge.
getting too much snow to be at this crap in my driveway.
Thanks guys,
mark
>>Yes it starts then
..next..does it make the noise as soon as you get in the gear and not in neutral? or is only wen u release the clutch and engage the tranny?
>>Only when i release the clutch and engage the tranny
sounds to me like a bad gear box..maybe u have a bad rear diff. does the driveshaft spin? can you turn it with your hand?
>>No, and diff seems fine
maybe u have a bad gearbox afterall...drain the fluid and see if you have any metal in it...
>>I will drain it tom evening. How much fuid do i need too fill it so i can buy the right amount
You say a bad gearbox, what part of the internals could cause these symptoms.
Thanks,
mark
also i checked all the cv joints, all good. however it does sound like the time i lost a rear joint. Just ot give a better idea of the sound
