Default stereo installation...

Still trying to install my new CD player in my '88 Audi 90... I took out the factory head unit and there were black, brown, and red plugs and two wires for the antenna. I bought a standard Volkswagen wire harness (supposed to work on Audis!) and an antenna adapter... after hooking everything up except for the red plug (which I was told was not neccessary - no place to plug into on the wire harness anyway, just spots for the brown and black...) there was no power to the CD player. Can anyone tell me what I may have done wrong or do I just have a crack *** new head unit that needs to be exchanged?

Default Nope.

Had the same issue with my 88 putting a stereo in and using the VW adapter I got. I ended up giving up on it and found a constant and ignition 12v, ran my own ground and did trial and error to find each speaker wire. I did not have a wiring diagram. I'm sure there's an easier way to do it, but I was looking for a quick fix at the time (2 years ago).

maybe the wire harness is wrong...perhaps the last red plug is PWR. come on man, investigate!

I tested them out with the factory head unit... the black is the power. It also works without the red...

Any other ideas?

Find wire diagrams and find out exactly what each wire is. then proceed further

OK, I know I've posted this before...

The Audi deck uses three plugs, two are for the speakers (front gets a plug, rear gets a plug, and your rears are AMPLIFIED so you WILL burn the amp up if you run them off the new deck!). The Power/GND/Ant switch group also gets its own plug.

Here are a couple pics of a Jetta GLi deck I have, and is what I used when I rewired my CQ's wiring to match the VW (and Blaupunkt) wiring scheme. You need to condence the large 10-pin plug (rear speakers) with the 4-wire, 8-pin plug (front speakers).

Red is generally the Deck power
Orange or Yellow is the Face light Power (so it can be switched if desired)
There are sevral Speaker connex you'll have to figure those out (connect to a AA battery and you'll hear a scratchy sound from the speaker)
The blue wires, one for the power antenna, and one for the door buzzer (to remind you the radio is still on if you have non switched power to the face lights.
That's all I can remember for now but it should at least get your power on.
